SOLANG NALA
Baseline information and maps depicting current landuse/landcover
patterns in the different areas of HP were generated using IRS 1D LISS
III. Of the 12 vegetation types identified in Solang nala watershed of
Kullu, HP (Fig. 5.2), maximum area was occupied by alpine followed by
sub-alpine pastures.
Vegetation mapping in the hitherto unexplored area of Bhabha valley Kinnaur, HP was carried out using resolution-merged images of IRS 1D LISS III, PANCHROMATIC and Knowledge Base Classification techniques in combination with Digital Elevation Model. A total of 15 landuse/landcover classes were mapped in the area as shown (Fig. 5.3). The forests were dominated by Cedrus deodara, Abies pindrow,Pinus wallichiana and Betula utilis. Alpine scrub dominated by Rhododendron anthopogon, Juniperus spp., and Cassiope sp. represented the largest area followed by forests dominated by A. pindrow and P. smithiana.
