 The campus sprawls across 250 acre area. IHBT has the most modern laboratories for work on plant biotechnology, bioinformatics, natural plant products, floriculture and biodiversity. Tea and rose plantations, processing plants of rose, tea and stevia helps in field experiments and demonstrations. A modern library cum auditorium building is an important asset. Biotechnology


A herbal garden for laying agronomic trials of medicinal plants. GIS facility with hard wares like computer, plotter, scanner and software Erdas Imagine 8.6, ArcGis 8.3 for creation of maps. A complete IT facility with PCs and Servers for documentation of ethnic knowledge and database preparation of plant resources of Western Himalayas. A mobile lab for undertaking survey and other studies on high altitude areas.

 Plant tissue culture lab has a modern culture room with automated shaker, an exclusive area for washing & media preparation. A series of greenhouses / polyhouses for hardening of tissue culture raised plants. A biolistic gun and a containment facility for undertaking studies on transgenics. A bioreactor (10 ltr ) for carrying out studies on secondary metabolites.
 Plant molecular biology lab is equipped with PCR, gel document systems, 2-D electrophoresis system, manual & automatic sequencer, phosphoimager. High end equipments like QTof, Spot cutter and spot digester aids studies in proteomics. Bioinformatics facility with high end server and softwares strongly support the molecular biology work.

Natural Plants & Products









































  A 12 ha area for cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants. A 10 Q, 4 Q and 15 kg capacity distillation unit for processing of aromatics. An exclusive 50 kg capacity unit for processing medicinal plants. A series of polyhouses for cultivation of important endangered high altitude medicinal & aromatic plants. The natural chemistry lab is equipped with NMR, HPLCs, GC-MS, rotavapour, sonicator, microwave synthesizer for undertaking studies on chemotypes, chemical characterization and process development for natural colours and dyes. A bioreactor (10 L) for undertaking studies on bio-transformations. For development of products, facilities like industrial rotavapour (50 Q capacity), spray dryer, filter press, solvent extraction unit, water purification unit and ion exchange columns exist.

Tea Science









































 Experimental tea garden (32 acre) for undertaking studies on agrotechnology, organic farming, pesticide residue analysis and tea management practices along with a tea processing plant. A well equipped lab with GC to undertake studies on quality parameters of tea. An entomology pesticide residue analysis lab. equipped with GC, HPLC. A pathology lab with modern environment control room, fluorescence microscope, RT-PCR, electrophoresis unit with Gel Doc system along with several minor equipments.

 Floriculture









































 A floriculture field with greenhouse to undertake agrotechnological studies under field and polyhouse conditions. A cold chamber for preserving quality planting materials. A plant virology lab equipped with Ultracentrifuge, PCR, ELISA reader, electrophoresis and gel document systems along with several other minor equipments. An exclusive culture lab for raising virus free planting materials of ornamentals.



















































 The institute has a well furnished guest house, a students hostel with 24 hr internet connectivity. Well furnished quarters are provided to the employees either in the main campus or in Bharmat colony / Housing Board (very near to the main campus). Transportation facility is provided to the children of the staff for going to the school.
