Bioresource Development Unit

The significance of conserving natural bioresource has been realized globally. A large number of Himalayan plant species are threatened to the verge of extinction . The foremost necessity today is to update and understand the present distribution status of our floristic wealth , facing the faster ever rate of erosion. There is need to generate appropriate awareness , develop human resource  and standardized cultivation packages to conserve flora vis-à-vis rising industrial demand of characterized herbal material with assured supply.
A project Bioresource Development unit at IHBT Palampur ( funded by National Bioresource Development Board , New Delhi) was initiated in February 2003 with following objective:

Objectives

Survey , inventorisation and characterisation  of plant and viral resource of landscape types of western Himalayan in Himachal Pradesh

Survey, collection , identification of angiosperms and gymnosperms , mapping specific landscape land use of western Himalaya , sampling plant populations , assessing types and intensity of anthropogenic factors , documentation of folk knowledge , characterization studies in conifers , assessment of variability in population of certain plants , strengthening of herbarium and bio-resource museum as a regional facility , computerization of all information , production of species spatial data maps using GIS environment and data analysis and interpretation of the information.

Viral Diversity

Survey and collection of probable viruses , detection of viruses using group specific probes , differentiation of the initially identified viruses into separate subgroups by using specific probes and raising monoclonal antibodies against novel viruses/ strains, analysis of the initial sequencing for the identification of novel viruses and further characterization of the novel viruses identified after analysis.

Conservation and sustainable utilization of Bio-resources

Seed biology, dispersal mechanisms, cryo-preservation, packaging and seed-dispersal techniques in tree species; standardization of propagation technology , collection and storage of propagules of target plant species , studies on vegetative and in-vitro propagation, eco-physiology and adaptation for ex-situ propagation, agro-techniques for large-scale cultivation.

Introduction of novel and economically important plant species and product development

Technology Development and transfer

Training and capacity building

Regular training to be imparted to farmers, rural women , entrepreneurs , NGOs, foresters, scientists, scholars etc., in the area of awareness on bioresources,  floriculture, tissue culture, processing and cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, virus indexing, bioinformatics and IPR.
